The Freak Circus
((Trigger Warnings: Blood, Creepy stuff, Gore, Yandere and Obsessive Tendencies))
It’s always interesting to discover what truly grabs my attention. This Saturday, after finishing my homework, I found myself casually scrolling through Instagram when a reel stopped me in my tracks. It featured gameplay from a new rising hit, The Freak Circus, and curiosity immediately took over.
If you enjoy dark, unconventional stories, this game may be right up your alley. I’ll avoid major spoilers, but I can confidently say the experience is intense, imaginative, and anything but boring.
You begin by customizing your character, choosing both name and gender, before stepping into their daily life working at a café. On the way to work, you encounter the first of many unforgettable characters: Pierrot, a towering 6’5 jester with deeply volatile emotions. Pierrot quickly reveals an overwhelming attachment to the protagonist that borders on obsession. His behavior is unsettling yet layered, as he alternates between invasive actions and a fierce desire to protect you, particularly from another circus member, Harlequin. An interesting detail is that Pierrot initially barely speaks, but as he spends more time with you, especially when you’re alone together, he gradually opens up and becomes more vocal.
Harlequin is introduced the following day and immediately raises red flags. His demeanor is suspicious, provocative, and intentionally unnerving. From the moment he appears, the tension is unmistakable. Pierrot’s hatred toward Harlequin only heightens the suspense, and depending on your choices, events escalate quickly and dramatically when you follow Harlequin to his tent.
As the story unfolds, we learn that Pierrot’s intense protectiveness is rooted in past trauma, specifically the loss of his former lover, Columbina. The game weaves in symbolic storytelling through the legend of the Purple Jester, drawing parallels between circus members. The jealous figure marked in green strongly suggests Harlequin, while the grief-stricken, lovesick character mourning Columbina is almost certainly Pierrot. These connections add emotional depth and encourage players to read between the lines.
Alongside the central plot, there’s a lingering mystery involving your friend Carol, who has gone missing under suspicious circumstances. Without revealing too much, the truth surrounding her disappearance is closer than you might expect.
If you’re intrigued by dark romance, psychological horror, and complex characters driven by obsession and devotion, The Freak Circus is absolutely worth exploring. It was genuinely exciting to play, and I’m eagerly awaiting the next update. There’s an incredible amount of lore to unpack, and every detail makes the world feel more immersive.
Step into the circus and see for yourself. 🎪✨ —→
